Contemplating Colors

Contemplating Colors   18" x 24"  oil on canvas

Sometimes I like to take my small studies and make them bigger. There is so much more room on the canvas to play around with larger strokes and have some fun with texture.

Sennelier  6" x 8" oil on board

Next time you're shopping in Paris don't forget to stop by the
famous Sennelier Art Shop on the Left Bank (Rive Gauche).
It's not just for pastels anymore...

Contemplating Colors

Contemplating Colors  8" x 10"  oil on board

The last painting in a session seems to turn out the best.  Maybe it's because I'm warmed up and in the flow.  Maybe it's because the late afternoon light creates more intense warm and cool shades.  Or maybe it's because there is a more interesting mix of colors on my palette.
What do you think?

Touch of Red

Touch of Red   6"x 8"  Oil on Board

This is another timed quick study from life.  I like the suggestion, the lost edges,  and the colors of the under painting showing though.

Future Fajitas

Future Fajitas 6"x 6" oil on board

What inspires me to paint has to do more with the colors, shapes, patterns and light than what the actual subject matter is.  When I'm painting, it doesn't matter whether it's a figure, a still life or a landscape, it all boils down to simple artistic principles: values, composition, color, and texture-
just to name a few....

Fresh Juice

Fresh Juice  6"x6" Oil on Board

This is the time of year the orange trees ripen in Malta.  It's so cool to just step into my garden and pick something off the tree to paint!  I've been timing my studies recently which is a great learning tool.  Not only does it make me faster it doesn't give me time to get fussy and over think things.  Paintings seem to turn out better when they come from an intuitive place. All I was thinking about when I painted this was following the values and patterns. It was lots of fun.
I've entered it in the Daily Paintworks challenge- Paint it before you eat it.

Blue Shoes

Blue Shoes  6" x 8" oil on board

Recently I've been working from life and sharing the modeling cost with some friends.  It's really interesting how differently we approach things.
We usually warm up with quick ten minute sketches and then do a few timed longer poses, with the longest being 45 minutes.  A good time is had by all.

Some of my friends out there may have noticed a slight pause in my postings. I have been stuck in the technological doldrums. My IMac 24's hard drive crashed so I had to order a new computer. Things seem to move quite slowly in Malta, island time I suppose. My old Mac, who I hated to see go,
has now been replaced with a two terabyte dual monitor monster that is much smarter than I am.
I feel like a red neck cruising the strip on Friday night in a suped up truck with way too much horsepower. But, when I actually learn to drive this baby, fasten your seat belts!
