After Vermeer's Girl with Hat

After Vermeer's Girl with Hat  10 x 7 oil on board

Vermeer has always been one of my favorite artists.  I did this
simplified three value study interpretation to help
me understand how he painted the light
so well.  I made it
more fun by painting with a few of my favorite colors:
cad yellow medium
quinacridone red
and carbazole violet.

  1. I could have sworn I had left a comment on this great piece. I had used my phone so that may be the problem.
This is one of my favs by Vermeer. It is the mouth, which he has looking so moist which always has me staring in pure awe.
Anyway I love how expressive you have made it. The one thing he didn't or could not do, so you made it your own.Well done!

  2. Hi Julie, thanks for commenting. I debated whether or not to even show it but figured artists have been learning from and copying masters for centuries, why not? It's not supposed to be a copy, more of an interpretation where I could explore and understanding how he massed the darks to let the light shine.
