This week has been filled with firsts-

-my first paint out ever

AND

-my first 'first place' award in a outdoor competition!

I was beyond thrilled to receive this award from juror

Don Ward

whose work I have admired for years.

I was really delighted and very surprised to get this award, but I'll never forget the look of surprise on Don's face when I walked up to receive the award.  The expression on Don's face said-

"who is this woman impostor trying to claim Bruce's award". 

Priceless!

I have wanted to try these paint outs since I got back from Europe,

and decided to enter Paint the Town in nearby Marble Falls.

It was a well done event to promote the arts in the area and I owe a big

thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard for the event.

Wow- I wasn't expecting all the pressure and of

course the weather predicted thunder storms.

But I managed to get out early for this one on the first day and it didn't rain till later:)

The Blue Bonnet Cafe has been open since 1929 and is a Texas icon,

complete with Pie Happy Hour.

These folks are maringue magicians!

I promise your mouth will water.

The famous Texas blue bonnets were in full bloom in their front garden so it was the perfect time to paint this iconic cafe.

The painting sold to the owners and it was one big happy family.

Another big thank you!

I did this plein air painting in France last spring when I took

a workshop with Ovanes Berberian,

a true master painter and student of

Sergei Bongart.

There were only four of us in the workshop

which was great!  Very unlike the large groups

he has in the states. It was wonderful to get so much

personal direction from a master's perspective.

The best thing about a workshop IMHO is

to be able to focus on painting and not worry about

anything else.

With so much going on about my house I really

relish these memories of the moody French

countryside and just painting, painting, painting!

Shed at Wenmohs

I loved going out plein air recently and meeting

some new painting buddies from 

Plein Air Austin.

We met at Wenmohs Ranch

which hosts some fantastic art workshops.

There was only a handful of us there, probably due

to the 100 degree plus weather forecast.

I had a wonderful time, despite the heat,

and found it peaceful and quiet.

It's been pretty loud around my house lately with the

extensive remodeling going on.

Drills, jack hammers, saws, and more add to chaotic musical mix.

Exciting!  The storm before the calm.

My friend Jeni and I went out the other evening to paint the 'magic hour'.

That particular day was very special because we actually had clouds

in Malta, which normally has deep blue cloudless skies. 

The unusual weather was also accompanied by gale force winds.

I'm not kidding, seriously, it was a moderate gale

but, hey, it was still as gale.

Tie down the Solteck, tape the palette in place, and just forget the visor.

Afterward we had a good laugh at what our hair looked like:

We looked alot like my buddy Robi:)
